Today February 12th is Abraham Lincoln’s birthday. We honor him for his strong character, leadership, and honesty, which is how he earned the nickname Honest Abe. During his presidency, he issued the Emancipation
Proclamation, which began the process of freeing America’s slaves, and fought to keep the nation from dividing after the Civil War.

The origins of jigsaw puzzles go back to the 1760s when European mapmakers pasted maps onto wood and cut them into small pieces. John Spilsbury, an engraver and mapmaker, is credited with inventing the first jigsaw puzzle in 1767. The dissected map has been a successful educational toy ever since. American children still learn geography by playing with puzzle maps of the United States or the world. The eighteenth century inventors of jigsaw puzzles would be amazed to see the transformations of the last 250 years. Children’s puzzles have moved from lessons to entertainment, showing diverse subjects like animals, nursery rhymes, and modern tales of super heroes. But the biggest surprise for the early puzzle makers would be how adults have embraced puzzling over the last century.*

Nelson Mandela turns 94! The world along with South Africa celebrates the birthday of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, a politician who served as President of South Africa from 1994
to 1999, the first ever to be elected in a fully representative democratic election.
Two of my favorite quotes by Mr. Mandela:
A good head and a good heart are always a formidable combination.
Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.

Teaching your child to tell time can be trying if you don’t know the easiest steps to take. However, if you utilize a step by step process, your child can learn at their own pace. Five years old is a good age to begin to teach your child how to tell time.
