Coloring Pages American Flag Coloring Pages Printable Color Worksheet State Flag History

Did you know the idea for an annual Flag Day was advocated by a school teacher?

On Flag Day, June 14th, we celebrate the symbol of our nation – the American Flag. It represents the values, ideals, and freedoms of the United States. Our flag is a symbol of the nation’s history, its struggles, and its achievements. The flag has been a part of the country’s identity since the birth of the nation and has played a significant role in the country’s history.

This annual holiday is a great opportunity to take a moment to appreciate the significance of the flag and what it means to us as Americans.

If your kiddos or students are spending their Flag Day indoors, download the Coloring Page American Flag activity or consider purchasing the full U.S. Flag Pack on TPT.

Constitution Day

Constitution day is held on September 17th.

Constitutional Congress of the United States of America held it’s final meeting on September 17, 1787. Do you have any idea why? That’s right! It was to sign the Constitution of the United States of America, a document for which they so painstakingly labored to create and perfect.*

After the meeting there was still much to do. Individual states then had to meet and vote on it. The U.S. Constitution did not go into effect until  two years later on March 4, 1789.*

To celebrate the occasion, I’m sharing a page out my Doodles U.S. Government Coloring Fun Book. Click the Constitution Day Sheet to download and enjoy!

Anticipating the Groundhog

Happy Groundhog Day

Groundhog Day falls on February 2 in the United States. It is a part of popular culture among many Americans and it centers on the idea of the groundhog coming out of its home to “predict” the weather.*

The holiday has quite the history. On February 2, 1887, Groundhog Day, featuring a rodent meteorologist, is celebrated for the first time at Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. According to tradition, if a groundhog comes out of its hole on this day and sees its shadow, it gets scared and runs back into its burrow, predicting six more weeks of winter weather; no shadow means an early spring.**

Groundhog Day has its roots in the ancient Christian tradition of Candlemas, when clergy would bless and distribute candles needed for winter. The candles represented how long and cold the winter would be. Germans expanded on this concept by selecting an animal–the hedgehog–as a means of predicting weather. Once they came to America, German settlers in Pennsylvania continued the tradition, although they switched from hedgehogs to groundhogs, which were plentiful in the Keystone State.**

Groundhogs, also called woodchucks and whose scientific name is Marmota monax, typically weigh 12 to 15 pounds and live six to eight years. They eat vegetables and fruits, whistle when they’re frightened or looking for a mate (they’re sometimes called whistle pigs) and can climb trees and swim.**

The Secret Life of Pets

This animated comedy from Illumination Entertainment asks the question: what do our pets do all day when we’re not home? For the critters living in a Manhattan apartment building, the answer is: whatever they want! A terrier named Max (voice of Louis C.K.) regularly invites his friends to hang out at his place while his owner (Ellie Kemper) is gone, but his quiet life is upended when said owner also takes in Duke (Eric Stonestreet), a stray mutt whom Max instantly dislikes. Their feud eventually causes both of them to get lost in New York City, and as they work together to find their way home, they cross paths with a vicious bunny (Kevin Hart) who plans to lead a group of abandoned pets on a mission of revenge against humanity. Jenny Slate, Albert Brooks, Lake Bell, Hannibal Buress, Tara Strong, Steve Coogan, Dana Carvey, and Bobby Moynihan also lend their voices to the film, which was directed by Chris Renaud (Despicable Me 2) and Yarrow Cheney*. ~ Jack Rodgers, Rovi
